Purgatory. In the Roman Catholic doctrine it is defined as a place or state of suffering inhabited by the souls of sinners who are expiating their sins before going. This seemed to be the perfect definition of high school for one Edward Cullen as well. Nothing here could hold his attention; nothing here was remotely interesting. He wished he was able to sleep, wished it more than anything. Instead, he felt like he was stuck in his own personal hell and boredom was his punishment. The thoughts of the other kids here couldn’t keep him entertained, they all thought about meaningless stuff. He didn’t look into his siblings thoughts out of respect but sometimes it was just hard to not purge.
Rosalie was thinking of none other than herself. It was just how Rosalie was. He never really felt bad about hearing Emmett’s thoughts because he always either spoke them or put his thoughts into action. At the moment, he was trying to figure out how to get back at Jasper after losing to him last night during a wrestling match. He felt bad about checking in on Jasper, but it was just harder for him. This life they led was difficult because of how Jasper had been raised. Also, Edward thought it was madness to test him like this. Who knows what kind of trouble they could be facing just from the small flush of the cheeks from the cold outside.
Edward. The sound of his name brought him to reality. It was Alice just wanting to know how Jasper was holding up. They had their private way of speaking that not any of their siblings or any other person in the area could read or even know was going on. Being able to hear thoughts helped greatly. Alice and he had to stick together. They both had some special ability that was out of the norm, even for their species, and when you’re already considered a freak to the humans, its best not to be considered one to your own kind.
Edward Cullen. Although his name was not spoken, his head turned in the direction that it came from out of reflex. Thoughts sounded just like the person’s voice really. His eyes locked with a pair of wide, chocolate-brown human eyes for a small portion of a second. That small portion gave him enough time to be able to define the shape of her face; heart-shaped. He knew the face though he’d never seen it in person until now. All throughout the day, the student body minds were filled with images and thoughts of this new girl; Isabella, or Bella as she preferred, Swan. He had got a good enough idea of what she looked like thanks to the students of Forks High so recognized her right away. Bella was the daughter of the town’s police chief and was brought to live here by some new custody situation. It didn’t take him long to look away, bored. Yet, he hadn’t realized that it wasn’t her who thought his name until the thought continued.
Of course she’s already crushing on the Cullen’s. ((Midnight Sun 4)) The thoughts belonged to none other than Jessica Stanley. Jessica used to fantasize about making out with Edward and it had annoyed him to no end. He was overjoyed when she finally gave up on that fantasy. Fat lot of good it will do her. She’s really not even pretty. I don’t know why Eric is staring so much… or Mike. ((Midnight Sun 5)) Edward could tell that Jessica was not really pleased with the attention Bella was getting. Most of the guys were chasing after her like a lost puppy almost. These kids sure did get excited over the smallest things.
Edward told Emmett about how Jessica was dishing all the dirty details about the Cullen’s. Emmett just hoped that Jessica was making it good and wanted to know if the girl was disappointed in the town’s gossip. Edward tried to zero in on Bella’s thoughts of Jessica’s story, especially since the family depended on Edward to protect the family from any people who got too suspicious of them.
There was silence, absolutely nothing coming from the new girl’s thoughts. He turned to check to see if she had possibly moved, but she was still there and he could hear Jessica still talking to her. When he turned, his eyes locked with those same chocolate-brown eyes of hers because she was looking at them. So she should be thinking about them right? Why couldn’t he hear her thoughts then? He listened harder; worried it was something wrong with him. All the voices around him that he’d been blocking were now screaming in his head, and most were about the new girl of course. He could not hear a single thought from Isabella Swan though. Not a peep.
He could, however, hear her crystal clear when she spoke to Jessica. “Which one is the boy with the reddish brown hair?” ((Twilight 22)) She snuck a look at him but looked away when she saw he was looking. Hearing her voice didn’t help with finding where her thoughts were; still silence came from her. Jessica wished her luck, quite rudely in her mind though. “That’s Edward. He’s gorgeous, of course, but don’t waste your time. He doesn’t date. Apparently none of the girls here are good-looking enough for him.” ((Twilight 22)) Jessica told her. Edward had to smile at this because she had no idea what kind of monster he was and if she did know, she would not be so bitter towards him now or feel lucky that she, or anyone else for that matter, did not appeal to him.
Edward sat alone in his biology class. He believed it was because most of the students in the class were instinctively afraid of him. Also he was considered a freak to them as were all the Cullen’s in high school. He was wishing he were able to sleep again. The new girl’s name intruded his mind when Angela Weber escorted her into their biology class. Angela was a nice girl, pretty shy though. According to her thoughts, she seemed to believe that Bella was kind of the same way. Mike of course was happy that Bella shared this class with him. He already had a lab partner for the year though. Thinking of that, Edward realized the only available seat in the class was next to him.
Bella headed towards the teachers desk, she walked in front of the flow of the air that blew towards him from the vent. Her scent hit him like a wrecking ball or a tidal wave; no image was violent enough to picture the force of what the scent was doing to him really. He was nowhere near the human he had been a few moments ago. All that he was now was a predator, and Bella was his prey. He could feel the venom pooling in his mouth. It was just him and her, the rest were honestly just collateral damage. Thirst burned the back of his throat like a wild fire. The mystery of her thoughts were long forgotten in his mind because he honestly did not care about her thoughts. She wouldn’t be thinking them much longer. She would be nothing more when he was done with her. The monster inside him wanted one thing; that one thing happened to be Bella’s blood. He would kill her first. No, that would not work because that would give the others time to scream. He would have to kill her then go block the door and kill the rest and by that time her blood would be cold. He’d kill the others first, it’d take ten seconds tops, then he’d take his time with her though he’d make her death quick and painless. He owed her that much. All this happened within one step.
STOP!!! Edward shouted at himself. This was not him. He could already picture Carlisle’s face, disappointed in him. Rosalie would be upset with him because she liked it her or whatever. Her opinion didn’t really matter to him though. He would feel terrible though for making his family relocate after getting settled here finally. But that scent, that glorious, mouth-watering scent. It was unlike anything he’d ever smelt before. It didn’t help that’d it been about two weeks since they last hunted and so his eyes were pitch black. She came to sit by him and he had to grip the end of the table to keep him in his seat. Of course, gripping the table meant he broke off a chunk and he had to destroy the evidence that it looked like a hand. That would be a hard one to explain.
As soon as the class ended, Edward bolted out of there, needing to put as much space between him and the mouth-watering smell of Bella Swan. In fear that she would be in his last class, he skipped out and went directly to the front office, he wanted to try to get out of the class that he happened to share with her. Fortunately, the old lady at the front desk was ridiculously attracted to Edward, despite their “age difference.” It didn’t matter though, because no matter how much he tried to coax or charm Mrs. Cope into changing his schedule, she couldn’t do it. The other classes were full or something. Bella had come in sometime during this. “I guess I’ll just have to deal with it.” The words came out harsher than he intended but he didn’t care at the moment, just wanted to get out of there. And so, he left in a hurry to the car where his siblings where waiting.
That was a week ago. Edward had dropped his siblings off at home and then took off for Alaska, after telling Carlisle as well. It may not have been a smart move, but he needed to get away and think. He hunted for most of the time as well because he knew that he’d have to go back someday and when he did, he wanted to be prepared for that wonderful, heavenly scent that belonged to none other than Bella Swan. Just thinking about it made the venom pool in his mouth. He couldn’t have gone to school in the condition that he had been in anyways last week. He was sure that the monster inside of him would have gone through with the a million and one plans it had come up with to drain the girl.
Edward had made the decision to hunt all night before heading to school in the morning. He knew that if he was going to get through the day, he had to be so full of blood, he’d probably burst if he had another drop. He felt anxious all day, going from class to class, listening to what was going on around Bella, going to lunch and watching Bella, listening to her friends’ thoughts, until he finally made it to biology. He was there before she was and he watched the door for her. He held his breath as soon as he heard Mike’s thoughts alerting him that Bella was on the way. When she entered the room he knew that it was time for the torturous scent to try to make him crack, but he would hold his breath. Now if he could just make it through the class without having to speak.
Edward watched her as she made her way to her seat beside him. The mental debate began than, should he say something to her? He should right? Last week he was incredibly rude to her. He should try to make up for it, no? Being a vampire, this went on for longer than it should have in the mere seconds that passed by. Finally though, he made his decision. “Hello,” It came out smooth, like his usual voice and not his harsh one that she heard last week when he walked out of Mrs. Cope’s office. “I’m Edward Cullen.” Again, smooth as butter. After he was finished talking, he realized that he would have to inhale in order to be able to speak again and after enticing a conversation with her, he was sure he was going to have to talk again. Well he sure knew how to screw himself over. Maybe if he breathed in through the mouth, then it wouldn’t be so bad, would it? There was only way to find out. Just barely opening his mouth, he inhaled enough air to get a sentence or two out, should the need arise. He felt the familiar burn and started the mental beating to himself.
