The cover represents the scene where Aro and the Volturi are facing off against Carlisle and friends.
From what I know of chess, the big piece with the crown on it is either the king or the queen, the queen being the most powerful peice, but as easy to take out as any other piece.
The queen-or-king piece represents Aro.
The little red one, I think, is a pawn. The moves the pawn can make are more limited.
The pawn piece represents Bella.
The cover shows the tiny, almost insignificant pawn facing off against the big tough queen. It was quite poetic and clever of Steph to choose that cover
It is not my idea but what a friend of mine came up with. It fits if you thinka bout it

that sounds right and its the king. The peice on the cover is in fact the king. and that makes a lot of since

Actually, the pieces on the cover are a pawn and the queen. Steph says it represents Bella. She started off as the pawn- relatively useless. Now she is the most powerful piece on the board- the queen. She said it represents Bella's transformation. Thought you might like to know. ;D
Nice theory though. =]

My theory was that Bella was the queen, and Renesmee was the red pawn. Red being violent, as in a violent change (of plans, not the transformation...lol)
The white was peace, because everything was going great for Bella, but there came the demon child to ruin things for her. lol
